A night of enduring blizzard conditions had seen the wind so strong that it was difficult to even stand upright and the visibility a white out. The sound through the night was like a jet engine outside. Waking early from the sleeping bag to capture sunrise I nearly didn't get up after a poor nights sleep. But, on heading out I saw Seamans Hut covered in wind blown snow and ice from the storm. It was a great opportunity to capture what this hut endures in winter and the reason for its creation - as an emergency shelter for the sometimes harsh conditions experienced in this area."- Scott
Seamans Hut was built in 1929 and was originally named the Laurie Seaman Memorial Chalet, to commemorate Seaman who, with his skiing companion Evan Hayes, perished in a blizzard whilst returning from Mt Kosciuszko in the winter of 1928. Both men perished from exposure during the night. Seamans body was not found until the spring, sat leaning against a rock just to the rear of the hut. Hayes body was not found for another 15 months - 3km away from Seaman near Lake Cootapatamba. After travelling from the US to visit the site Seaman was found, Seaman’s parents contributed £200 to the building of a memorial chalet, to provide shelter to future users of the park, to prevent recurrence of a similar tragedy.
