Snow gums are all around Jindabyne, wrapping the hills and plains of the Monaro in pale trunks and sculpted branches. While much lower than their nearby brethren located at the higher altitudes in Kosciuszko National Park, they are a key feature of the landscape. While many remnant stands remain extensive, lone trees still tell part of an an older story. They are all survivors from a previous climate, where temperatures were cooler and snow was lower. Since then, they still fight on, having survived land clearing, grazing, frost and fire, and years of change, holding their ground in exposed country where few other trees endure. Each solitary snow gum stands as a marker of the alpine environment itself. Tough, weathered, and quietly persistent.
