This snow gum, located at the bottom of Black Mountain is one of the last survivors of what used to be a continuous ring of snow gums circling the frosty, treeless flats of the Molonglo River. It is important both historically and ecologically.
Snow Gums (Eucalyptus pauciflora) are the most cold-tolerant eucalypts and this pocket of naturally occurring trees line the edge of a frost hollow. The scattered low land snow gums around Canberra are remnants of an extensive snow gum woodland that existed here during the last age.
