At the highest parts of the Macedon Ranges, snow gums (Eucalyptus pauciflora) cling to the exposed rocky outcrops. Here, at one of the highest points in the range, these remnant stands have survived changes in climate and bushfires that ravaged the Macedon Ranges in January 1939 and on Ash Wednesday 1983. Their trunks, often streaked with smooth bark in hues of silver, green and cream, contrast with the volcanic rock and sweeping views below. Subject to wind, frost and occasional snowfall, the snow gums here show the resilience of the species - enduring in a pocket far from the higher alpine regions where they are more typically found. These specimens, likely regenerated after the 1939 bushfires but survived those of 1983.
