"This was a great way to end two days on the Bogong High Plains. The day prior I had walked up Mount Bogong and as this day came to end, two hikers set up camp near Cope Hut and got the fire going in the fireplace inside the hut as I photographed. It created an additional element to make this photograph truly reflect life in the high country, one of my favourite areas of Australia." - Scott
Classified by the National Trust in 1988, Cope Hut was built in 1929. Cope Hut is one of the earliest tourist huts built on the Bogong High Plains. It was built following a proposal by Robert "Wilkie" Wilkinson for the Ski Club of Victoria after the state experienced a surge in skiing in the 1920s. Bill Spargo supervised the construction, with Bill Barrington, Jack Barrington and Martin Lawler as builders. Materials came by dray to Dibbins, then by sled to the High Plains. The hut was called 'The Menzies of the High Plains' by early skiers and walkers because of its size and comfort. The original hut had the main entrance coming into the ski room, but it was regularly snowed in, so a new door was cut into the 'back' wall, which remains to this day.
