Split Point Lighthouse stands on the cliffs above Aireys Inlet like a white sentinel looking out over the Southern Ocean. Built in 1891, it was originally powered by an oil wick lamp before shifting to gas, then electricity as technology marched on. Its job was simple but vital, warn ships away from the dangerous reefs and shifting currents along this part of the Great Ocean Road. The lighthouse was fully automated in the 1910s, ending the era of resident keepers, but the tower itself hasn’t lost its grip on the coastline’s imagination. Today it remains an active aid to navigation and a sharp reminder of the region’s maritime past, its red-topped form etched into the identity of Victoria’s Surf Coast.
