Bring a piece of the Australian southern coastline and it's maritime history into your interior with this dramatic scene of the Tom and Eva limestone stacks on the Great Ocean Road.
ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPH
Port Campbell National Park, Victoria, Australia.
The dreary morning seemed to reflect the mood that likely befell this area in 1878 when the ship Loch Ard was shipwrecked just off this location in 1878.
These two limestone stacks known as Tom and Eva, are the remnants of the Island Archway. The Island Archway was a 25 metre high, naturally formed rock arch that lay off Loch Ard Gorge, a bay on the south coast of Victoria. It collapsed on 10 June 2009. The two remaining piers are now officially named after the two teenage survivors of the shipwreck of the Loch Ard, which occurred just off the Island Archway in 1878. Thomas Pearce and Eva Carmichael were the only survivors out of 54 people who were on board the Loch Ard.
