You wouldn't know it from this photograph but the winds at the time were horrendous. I couldn't stand up and had to bury my tripod in the snow with the camera protruding just above the snow. I was huddled over the camera to try and keep it still for this exposure. With these strong winds and below freezing temperatures overnight, ice had built up on the dead branches of these snow gums (in a classic contrast of alpine extremes, these gums had been killed by bushfires which had ravaged the area only a few years earlier). I waited for sunrise hoping for some great light on the iced snow gums before me. My patience in the cold was rewarded, when the sun rose it lit up the area with beautiful warm light. A marked contrast with the freezing windy conditions at the time.
