I first came across this tree while bushwalking in summer, amazed that it had survived amongst nearby snow gums that had been burnt in severe bushfires which hit the area in 2003. Keen to capture this tree in winter, I camped out for a few nights nearby and returned to this tree while it was snowing. The tree was everything I remembered, but with its branches heavy from the snow and ice weighing it down. It was a remarkable example of alpine survival high in the Victorian Alps.
The snow gum tree is both a tough, resilient and a stunningly beautiful tree. It is a hardy eucalypt, native to Australia, perfectly adapted to its environment which can survive at extreme cold and hot temperatures. This particular tree is a fine example, enduring the harsh depths of winter and hot Australian summers high in the Victorian Alps.
