"Out for a few days, with high winds and snow falling, I was determined to capture snow gums in the harsh winter environment they experience every year. This ancient tree with its impressive sized trunk, was just one example. While many other snow gums were fully covered in snow and ice, this area was a little more protected, revealing more of the underlying bark. It allowed me to better show the age and character of this long lived specimen." - Scott
Snow gums can be remarkably long lived, with some surviving for many hundreds of years. They thrive in harsh alpine conditions, enduring freezing winters, scorching summer sun, strong winds, and heavy snow. Their resilience comes from tough, adaptive bark, the ability to regrow after damage, and deep roots that anchor them in rocky, exposed terrain. These traits allow snow gums to stand strong where few other trees can survive.
