"Finding still alive, ancient snow gums in Australia is becoming ever harder. This old specimen has experienced winters across centuries, yet even this one doesn't have long left. I last photographed this tree only a few years earlier and since that time it too is being attacked by the longicorn beetle. It was special to capture this tree, before it too is gone, suffering a fate so many like it across the Australian Alps." - Scott
Resilient though they are, snow gums are facing a convergence of pressures that is outpacing their ability to recover. Fires across the alps are burning hotter and more frequently, while at the same time, warming temperatures are pushing habitat boundaries higher and many of these ancient trees are dying as a result of attack from the native longicorn beetle (Phoracantha semipunctata).
