Due to the mostly hot, dry summer climate, bushfires in Australia occur frequently, particularly in the well forested areas of the Australian Alps. In recent times, the Victorian Alps have been subjected to major bushfire events and have been almost entirely burnt through by fires on a number of occasions. Most notably Black Thursday in 1851, Black Friday in 1939, in 2003 and again in the summers of 2006/7 and 2019/20.
