"Camping out in the Jagungal Wilderness Area had me waking up near Wheelers Hut and witnessing the area surrounded by fog. As the sun rose, the soft light through the fog ensured a beautiful moody feel to the area. Wheelers Hut seemed totally in place amongst the surrounding snow gums. Having seen no one for a couple of days, I felt totally uninterrupted. I was easily able to reflect on the remoteness of the area alongside both the recent human history and much longer natural history of this region. It was a truly special way to start the day, experiencing this part of Kosciuszko National Park and the legacy left behind by the creators of this hut." - Scott
Wheelers Hut is considered the quintessential cattleman's hut and the favourite of many. When you see it for the first time it feels idyllic, perfectly placed with a classic High Country atmosphere and a stunning view from the verandah.
The hut was built around 1900 for "Wingy" Wheeler, a wealthy grazier, and moved a few hundred metres to the present site in the 1920's. He was known as Wingy because despite of his one arm, he could ride, smoke and crack a stock whip all at the same time.
Wheelers Hut is a classic horizontal wood slab hut, with two rooms, two verandahs and a roof of iron. The hearth is a slab of stone and the chimney is of iron. There is a also an iconic old iron bath tub at the front, with drawings of local fish caught. Nearby to the hut are the Toolong Diggings, active from 1893 to 1904 with water races, mullock heaps and mining equipment still remaining.
