Nitmiluk Gorge (Katherine Gorge) Nitmiluk National Park, Northern Territory, Australia
Katherine Gorge, a deep gorge carved through ancient sandstone by the Katherine River, is the central attraction of the Nitmiluk National Park in the Northern Territory. The gorges and the surrounding landscape have great ceremonial significance to the local Jawoyn people, who are custodians of Nitmiluk National Park. Katherine Gorge consists of thirteen gorges, with rapids and falls following the Katherine River, which begins in Kakadu. Sitting high above the gorge on this evening, it was hard not to feel a quiet sense of solitude as I watched the sun set and the last light strike the Nitmiluk Gorge wall before me. As I photographed the sun setting I knew I had captured something special from this spectacular part of Australia.
