Diamantina Hut, Mount Hotham, Alpine National Park, Victoria, Australia

I had spent the day exploring and photographing the heights of Mount Hotham, during a heavy snow dump. On my way back down the mountain I was drawn to this hut, covered in snow. I waited patiently for a moment of clarity through the fog. Eventually a small break in the cloud rolling through saw the hut emerge from its foggy blanket. I quickly pressed the shutter and moments later the hut retreated behind a wall of white. Timing is everything in winter conditions like this.

Diamantina Hut has sheltered many people over the years from the freezing cold elements of Mount Hotham. Located at the end of the Razorback Spur, it is thought to have been built in 1969, replacing an old CRB hut that was previously sited here from 1923, but was burnt down in the 1939 fires. A great refuge for those walking off the Feathertop spur in a blizzard.
