Great Wall of China, Mutianyu, Beijing, Peoples Republic of China
Many visitors miss the less maintained sections of the Great Wall Of China. I chose to get off the beaten path to capture an image I feel is a more accurate reflection of the Great Wall of China. The overgrown sections of the Mutianyu sections of the Great Wall of China appeared to me as more authentic than the restored sections you are encouraged to visit.
Located among the orchards and pines in the mountains to the north of Beijing, the Great Wall of China was constructed and reconstructed at Mutianyu to keep out the nomadic tribes to the north. First built in the mid 6th century during the Northern Qi, Mutianyu Great Wall is older than the Badaling section of the Great Wall. In the Ming dynasty, under the supervision of General Xu Da, construction of the present wall began on the foundation of the wall of Northern Qi. In 1404, a pass was built in the wall. In 1569, the Mutianyu Great Wall was rebuilt and most parts of it are well preserved. The Mutianyu Great Wall has the largest construction scale and best quality among all sections of the Great Wall.
