"There's a certain excitement about finding ancient remnant stands of snow gums. The research, the travel, the exploration and finally finding specimens from a long lost era. This was one of those cases - a small remnant stand of snow gums (Eucalyptus pauciflora) surviving in unexpected lowland areas. This is an isolated relic from cooler climatic periods thousands of years ago. These pockets, which have survived clearing and grazing, mark where alpine and subalpine ecosystems once extended far beyond today’s high country. Their presence in the lowlands is like a living time capsule. They are evidence of shifting climates and ecological resilience, where species that once dominated vast cold landscapes now exist as scattered survivors in sheltered gullies or frost hollows." - Scott
