Majestic Uluru

Uluru (Ayers Rock), Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, Northern Territory, Australia

Uluru (Ayers Rock) is one of the largest monoliths in the world and has countless moods and manifestations. Dwarfed by the huge size of the rock and taking in the stories of the local indigenous culture, Uluru can have a remarkably humbling presence. Here I photographed Uluru from the western side with the sunset behind me. With the sun below the horizon, Uluru appeared a stunning red colour and the sky in soft pastel, making the rock stand out from the surrounding landscape and highlighting the fascinating patterns that sweep down the sandstone sides of Uluru. In the foreground, the moving spinifex adds focus to a sea of rich red earth and a distant desert oak.
