Cootapatamba Hut, Kosciuszko National Park, New South Wales, Australia
I was camped next to this hut for four lonely nights, not seeing another human for five days. The first two nights, my tent got buried in snow and the visibility was very limited. Breaks in the weather however permitted chances to witness this hut against the impressive backdrop of its alpine surrounds. Dark and dingy inside, when the hut is buried in snow, it is accessed via a door at the top of the 'chimney'.
The little red hut is a beacon for those seeking to escape the stormy weather that can come in very quickly around Mount Kosciuszko. It makes for a striking appearance against the white snow and clouds, easily seen amongst the desolate winter landscape.
Since taking this photo, Cootapatamba Hut has since been replaced by a completely new build replica in early 2019.
