Double Caldera

Ganung Batur, Bali, Indonesia

Volcanologists describe Gunung Batur as a 'double caldera', one crater inside another. The inner crater is a classic volcano-shaped peak, with the entire Ganug Batur like a giant bowl, with the bottom half covered by water and a set of volcanic cones jutting out of the middle. The newer volcanoes have obvious old lava flows oozing down their sides while the rim of the Gunung Batur crater offers some of Bali's most stunning vistas. On this day I was taken by the sheer size of this Volcano and the human life that now exits in and around it's rim. I hope in some way this image conveys just some of that feeling.
