Snow Gums, Mt Hotham, Alpine National Park, Victoria, Australia

On this summer evening, with the backdrop of rain and building storm clouds, I was drawn to these three Snow Gums amongst the summer wildflowers. As some of the highest snow gums in Victoria and surviving on the heights of Mt Hotham, they had somehow escaped the ravages of bushfires in the area in recent years. As the sun went down they seemed to stand alone in stark contrast to the harsh alpine conditions they have to withstand during the cold winter months while covered in snow and ice. I subsequently shot these three snow gums from the same vantage point in winter while covered in snow - providing a great complementary image to this one. See 'Braving the elements - Winter' for the winter image.
