WATERHOLE RETREAT - Acrylic Desk Block

Ellery Creek Big Hole, West MacDonnell National Park, Northern Territory, Australia

Ellery Creek Big Hole is one of the most popular and picturesque waterholes in the West MacDonnell Ranges. With towering orange/red cliffs and graceful river gums, this spectacular waterhole is fed by the mighty Ellery Creek. This dependable tributary of the Finke River cuts through a gorge in the West MacDonnell Ranges. The flow of water over countless years has carved out this beautiful waterhole and unlocked some amazing geology. The deep water that fills this waterhole stays cool even at the height of Australia’s hot desert summers.

On this occasion I was alone at the waterhole, able to enjoy the serenity and calm of this place, with some fish occasionally breaking the calm surface of the water and birds darting around making the most of the insects. It was hard not to appreciate why this location is popular with tourists in the summer months and has been the inspiration for many artists seeking to capture the essence of the waterholes of the Australian outback.
