GLACIAL LANDSCAPE - Acrylic Desk Block

Blue Lake, Kosciuszko National Park, New South Wales, Australia

Capturing this sunset photo of Blue Lake frozen over and covered in snow during the height of winter required camping out overnight on the snow nearby. On this evening I was presented with stunning sunset colours, which lit up Blue Lake and its surrounds, conveying the truly beautiful glacial landscape.

Blue Lake is one of only four cirque lakes found on the Australian mainland. The lake was formed when glaciers flowing from the Great Dividing Range converged and carved out a basin in the granite bedrock. Its valley contains the best developed glacial features in the Kosciuszko National Park alpine area of New South Wales. Blue Lake's surface is entirely open water and is frozen for about four months of the year; overflowing in spring with the melting of the snow. Its catchment provides habitat for a number of species that have been listed as threatened and a number of threatened plant and invertebrate species that are restricted to alpine areas are found here.
