Elder Range, Flinders Ranges, South Australia, Australia
For me, this image is quintessential Flinders Ranges. The land of this area is a country of thick, gnarled gum trees growing alongside stony creeks. There are ruins of farms left by pioneers, beaten back by the harsh landscape. The Flinders Ranges is an ancient and unique part of the world full of layers, colours, and vastness, an almost intimidating reminder that we are only on this earth for a short time. But most of all, it is a landscape dominated by the imposing ranges themselves - a beautifully rugged, 540 million year old landscape that changes the way you look at the world.
As I stood before Elder Range on this windy morning, the sunrise painted the layers of the landscape with soft colours, which created a classic old world feel reminiscent of the early paintings of the Flinders Ranges I had first seen when I was younger.
