Battling strong winds and constant snow meant challenging conditions to keep my camera lens dry and not get blown away. The result was a capture of fresh snow falling on this 'chilled' snow gum. I love to experience such winter weather amongst stunning Australian scenery as well as bringing back photos of true winter alpine moments. It was windy, snowing on and off, with clouds rolling over continuously. It made traversing the area challenging and difficult to spot good compositions through the fog. During clearer moments scenes like this emerged and I was able to capture snow gums in their true winter environment. Twisted and covered in ice, they seem to stand defiant against the harsh alpine conditions both they and I were facing that day. All great fun though to experience winter in the Australian Alps.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSnow gums (Eucalyptus pauciflora) dominate subalpine woodlands mountains of the southeastern Australian mainland at the altitudinal limit to tree growth. Forests and woodlands of snow gums can look quite uniform from a distance, but up close they have such character. This area forms part of Australia's Great Dividing Range and in winter is one of the largest snow covered areas in Australia. At all times of the year, the weather can change quickly on the High Plains and this day was no different. Earlier in the day I had left the Victorian township of Bright with temperatures well above 30 degrees celsius. By the time I reached the Bogong High Plains a changing weather system brought significantly cooler temperatures and low fog at the higher altitudes. I snow shoed up a series of steep slopes through a deep cover of snow to where this snow gum tree stood. I patiently waited for the conditions to settle. As dawn emerged the sky began to light up. With Wilpena Pound in the background, it was a perfect backdrop to capture this magnificent tree which survives despite the harsh realities of outback Australia.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThis old majestic river red gum\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, best known as '\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eCazneaux's Tree', is a much loved and famous tree near Wilpena Pound in the Flinders Ranges. It came to fame in 1937 when Harold Cazneaux photographed it and called it \"Spirit of Endurance\" as testament to life in such a hard and unforgiving environment. The two historic Gundagai bridges pictured in this photo are the Prince Alfred Bridge and the Railway Bridge. The Prince Alfred Bridge, the bridge in the background, was built in 1866, and was the first major crossing spanning the Murumbidgee River. It formed part of the Hume Highway until it was replaced by the Sheahan Bridge, built in 1976. The Prince Alfred Bridge is the longest timber viaduct in Australia. I just had to be sure I remembered where to come back to during winter! On my first visit after some heavy snow falls on Mount Hotham I went out and visited the tree. It was covered in snow but the clouds and sky didn't offer me the shot I was after. The weather wasn't right. I visited Hotham a number times over the following days and finally, after a few days of bad weather I treked out again to this tree. I was certainly thankful for my snow shoes given the deep blanket of snow. The conditions were horrible, heavy cloud, strong winds, and freezing temperatures, but it made for perfect conditions for the photograph I wanted - except the wind. By the time I got to the tree, the wind had died down but the thick fog remained, so it was just a matter of time. Not long before sunset, the light softened giving a creamy look to the landscape that you can see in the final photo. I had got the photograph I had envisioned so many months earlier. For me 'Snow Solitude' really sums up so much about the Australian Alps in winter. Captured while shrouded in fog, this snow gum withstands the harsh winter conditions as one the highest snow gums in Victoria. Surviving on the heights of Mount Hotham, it has somehow escaped the ravages of bushfires in the area in recent years. On this occasion, I was camped out on Mount Feathertop for five days in early winter and was keen to capture a photograph of the summit from up close. The weather however had other ideas with persistent snow and low cloud, precluding even seeing the summit for the first few days. As the sun set on my final day I was set up in position sure that the weather was finally improving. Briefly the cloud lifted in front of the summit with cloud remaining on the other side creating a dramatic backdrop. However it didn't take too long again for the cloud to return. As I returned to my tent for the night I felt happy to have captured what was a brief moment in the ever changing conditions over the summit of Mount Feathertop.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMount Feathertop is the second highest mountain in the Australian state of Victoria, rising to 1,922 metres (6,306 ft). It is usually covered in snow from June to September. Unlike most other Victorian mountains, Mount Feathertop has steep summit slopes instead of a rounded summit dome. It is this aspect that makes it great to photograph in winter, as it is the only real Australian alpine 'peak' that gets covered in snow. In winter, much of the higher reaches of the walking track are buried in snow. On this occasion, my afternoon on the track was spent in heavy fog, with constant snow falls and poor visibility. When the weather finally lifted a little for me to see more of what was before me, this was one of the first scenes that drew me in.
