Mount Hotham, Victoria, Australia
I captured this photograph in challenging winter conditions with freezing temperatures and poor visibility. I snow shoed up a series of steep slopes through a deep cover of snow to where this snow gum tree stood. I patiently waited for the conditions to settle. Once the wind abated the backdrop of the nearby fog created exactly the right mood. I captured this snow gum in perfect winter surrounds.
The snow gum is the quintessential alpine tree of the Australian mainland, yet bushfires have ravaged large swathes of snow gum habitat across the Victorian and New South Wales high country in recent decades. It is therefore special when you find unburnt trees like this. Burdened with ice and snow this snow gum, on the heights of Mount Hotham, bears testament to survival in some of the harshest alpine conditions in Australia.
