Snowy Sunrise

Snowy River, Kosciuszko National Park, New South Wales, Australia

Having been camped out backcountry for a few nights, I woke on this morning to clear skies and brilliant stars and made my way to the Snowy River. At these altitudes in winter, the river gets completely snow covered and I happily stood on top of the river with a good cover of snow beneath me. As I waited patiently for sunrise, I held little hope of anything spectacular due to the clear skies, but as the sun rose on the horizon some amazing light lit up selected parts of the range before me due to the horizon on my right slightly obscuring the sun. It's the little surprises like this and witnessing spectacular scenes with no one else around that make the effort of camping out in freezing overnight temperatures and getting up in the dark all worth it.
