Shortly before sunrise, the sky turned purple and I was greeted with this view of what felt like a tropical paradise. Only hours earlier, amidst occasional snow flakes, the area was buffeted by winds with low cloud flowing across the mountains obscuring this view. Setting up my tent in the afternoon I was unsure exactly what sunset would bring. By evening however the clouds had cleared and the wind all but gone, revealing a perfectly clear sky and heralding a change of weather system that would bring beautiful sunny weather the following day. After shooting this image and getting back to my campsite, just a short walk away, I enjoyed one of the calmest and most breathtaking evenings of the snow season. With clear skies, my view of some of Australia's highest mountains was illuminated by full moon throughout the night. Since I was kid, Mount Feathertop has held something special to me. From the views of it from Mount Hotham, to walking up its steep slopes and the view from the summit, it has drawn me back to the Victorian Alps time and time again. Mount Feathertop is the second-highest mountain in the Australian state of Victoria, rising to 1,922 metres and is usually covered in snow from June to September. Unlike many other Australian mountains, Feathertop has steep summit slopes instead of a rounded summit dome. It is this aspect that makes it great to photograph in winter, as it is the only real Australian alpine 'peak' that gets covered in snow. On this evening, after a great sunset, I decided to remain at this location a little longer and was rewarded with the sky on the horizon lighting up with the great colours you see here. On this evening I was presented with stunning sunset colours, which lit up Blue Lake and its surrounds, conveying the truly beautiful glacial landscape.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlue Lake is one of only four cirque lakes found on the Australian mainland. The lake was formed when glaciers flowing from the Great Dividing Range converged and carved out a basin in the granite bedrock. Its valley contains the best developed glacial features in the Kosciuszko National Park alpine area of New South Wales. Blue Lake's surface is entirely open water and is frozen for about four months of the year; overflowing in spring with the melting of the snow. I wanted to capture both of these highest features of Australia during the middle of winter. I had been camped out for a few days, not having seen anyone since I headed out backcountry. The weather had been horrible, consistent fog, snow with high winds and poor visibility, not to mention the below freezing temperatures. My morale was low having captured only a few photographs and the weather forecasts bearing no resemblance to what I was experiencing. After enduring a night of buffeting high winds I awoke on this morning before sunrise to relatively clear skies. After walking out in the pre dawn dark I was greeted by an ever changing light show before me, with dramatic changes in colours and constantly changing cloud formations due to the high winds. No other human was in sight as I looked out to the summit of Australia’s highest mountain, Mount Kosciuszko, illuminated in the distance. I was struck by the remoteness and isolation. The frozen waters of the creek below flowed into the distance. Photographing sunrises and sunsets in the winter can be a lonely and isolating experience. This was definitely one of those moments. The sunset had been uninteresting, yet as it got darker the landscape became illuminated by the afterglow of the now disappeared sun. It was these colours of winter I was determined to capture. Returning to my tent, I made dinner for the night reflecting that despite the isolation, just how awesome it is to be able to experience such moments. I couldn't stand up and had to bury my tripod in the snow with the camera protruding just above the snow. I was huddled over the camera to try and keep it still for this exposure. With these strong winds and below freezing temperatures overnight, ice had built up on the dead branches of these snow gums (in a classic contrast of alpine extremes, these gums had been killed by bushfires which had ravaged the area only a few years earlier). I waited for sunrise hoping for some great light on the iced snow gums before me. My patience in the cold was rewarded, when the sun rose it lit up the area with beautiful warm light. On this evening I was presented with stunning colours after sunset. As the sky darkened the last light lit up the frozen Blue Lake and the snow drifts along main range. This last light also reflecting off the low clouds created a magical winter scene amongst the glacial landscape.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlue Lake is one of only four cirque lakes found on the Australian mainland. A cirque lake is a deep lake formed by the head of a glacier. Blue Lake was formed when glaciers flowing from the Great Dividing Range converged and carved out a basin in the granite bedrock. Its valley contains the best developed glacial features in the Kosciuszko National Park alpine area of New South Wales. Blue Lake's surface is entirely open water and is frozen for about four months of the year; overflowing in spring with the melting of the snow.
