Merewether Ocean Baths, Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia

With stormy conditions and good cloud cover, I headed to Merewether Baths hoping for a moody sunset. The stormy atmosphere gave way for something a little softer with the pastel colours in the sky. Still, it was great conditions to capture the Merewether Baths in their ocean setting.

The Merewether Ocean Baths were built during the great depression. They were completed in 1935 by unemployed labourers through a depression-relief scheme. The baths consist of two large rectangular pools with an overall dimension of 100 metres x 90 metres. They are the largest ocean baths in the state of New South Wales. Located just three kilometres from the Newcastle city centre, the baths have a long history as a popular swimming spot in Newcastle.
