Ghost Gum, West MacDonnell National Park, Northern Territory, Australia

Having spent the day hiking part of the Laripinta Trail, I was drawn to photographing the stunning Ghost Gums of the area. As the sun set for the day, this tree stood in stark contrast to the stunning red rock cliffs behind it. With this tree surviving a harsh and varied climate, it was hard not to reflect on its place in this ancient land.

The West MacDonnell Ranges are an outstanding example of an ancient landscape sculptured over time by climatic elements. With distinctive white bark, the Ghost Gum features in aboriginal Dreamtime stories, occurring in arid areas on rocky slopes, red sand flats and dry creek beds across central Australia.
