I was cold and frustrated as the high winds made it difficult to photograph. Late in the day, the storm stopped and all over Mount Hotham the snow gums were covered in snow. It was a total winter wonderland. I found this secluded area, surrounded by snow gums buried and covered in ice and snow. Battling strong winds and constant snow meant challenging conditions to keep my camera lens dry and not get blown away. The result was a capture of fresh snow falling on this snow gum. I love to experience such winter weather amongst stunning Australian scenery as well as bringing back photos of true winter alpine moments. There are 36 boulders shoulder to shoulder, forming deep valleys and steep-sided gorges. Many visitors to the area find them more captivating than their prominent neighbour Uluru (Ayers Rock). Together these giant stone formations form the two major landmarks within the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. Later that morning a large snow storm arrived and dumped nearly a metre of snow over the next few days. They provide a strong reminder of pioneering days gone by. This derelict farm cottage near the town of Burra, in South Australia, was made famous after a photograph of it was used as the cover for the Australian rock band Midnight Oil's album ‘Diesel and Dust’ in the 1980s. Like many other ruins in the area, I'm sure this old farmhouse has its own special story to tell about its past. With no markings as to its history, I stood there imagining the original inhabitants looking out on the land before them from the front door and really wanted to capture this connection to the past. Standing alone as the sun set over the canyon, the colours were ever changing. I had the opportunity to soak in the peace and reflect on the truly ancient landscape that is outback Australia. Being in the middle of a vast spectacular landscape, alone, without other distractions, it was easy to feel connected to the landscape around me. Then, well after the sun had set, the afterglow created a stunning red glow on the rocks around me. I knew this was the time to capture a photograph to convey the natural beauty of this place. By evening however the clouds had cleared and the wind all but gone, revealing a perfectly clear sky and heralding a change of weather system that would bring beautiful sunny weather the following day. After shooting this image and getting back to my campsite, just a short walk away, I enjoyed one of the calmest and most breathtaking evenings of the snow season. With clear skies, my view of some of Australia's highest mountains was illuminated by full moon throughout the night. Without winter snow, a variety of old tracks and trails access some of Australia's best views, unique flora and fauna and some of the regions richest history, including many remaining alpine huts. Steeped in history and set in beautiful natural landscapes, High Country huts have played an important role in the recent European history of Australia's alpine region. The present JB Hut ('JB' was Jim Brown, one of two stockmen who were reputedly the first non Aboriginal people to venture onto the Bogong High Plains in 1851) was a forest hut from the Swifts Creek forestry region. With a little fog still remaining it softened the light from the rising sun and the moment was right for this capture. With the weather ever changing, I began to appreciate why so many cattleman's huts were built in this area. Eventually the rain cleared, but the grey and dark clouds persisted, softly illuminating the area around the hut. For me, this scene captures some of the mystique of the iconic Wallace Hut, sitting nestled in amongst the surrounding snow gums.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWallace Hut is one of 106 huts scattered across the Alpine National Park. Many of these huts were burnt in the 2003 bush fires but fortunately Wallace Hut survived. Wallace Hut is the oldest hut in the park. It was built by the three Wallace brothers - Arthur, William and Stewart - in 1889 from slabs of snowgum. They arrived as small boys in Melbourne from Ireland in 1869 with their parents. Since I was kid, Mount Feathertop has held something special to me. From the views of it from Mount Hotham, to walking up its steep slopes and the view from the summit, it has drawn me back to the Victorian Alps time and time again. Mount Feathertop is the second-highest mountain in the Australian state of Victoria, rising to 1,922 metres and is usually covered in snow from June to September. Unlike many other Australian mountains, Feathertop has steep summit slopes instead of a rounded summit dome. It is this aspect that makes it great to photograph in winter, as it is the only real Australian alpine 'peak' that gets covered in snow. On this evening, after a great sunset, I decided to remain at this location a little longer and was rewarded with the sky on the horizon lighting up with the great colours you see here.
