I was cold and frustrated as the high winds made it difficult to photograph. Late in the day, the storm stopped and all over Mount Hotham the snow gums were covered in snow. It was a total winter wonderland. I found this secluded area, surrounded by snow gums buried and covered in ice and snow. I lay on the ground, huddled around my tripod to protect my camera from the buffeting winds with the spectacular Mount Feathertop in the background. This is how I started the day - watching an incredible sky show as clouds rolled over the Victorian Alps. Later that morning a large snow storm arrived and dumped nearly a metre of snow over the next few days. This particular afternoon in the Victorian Alps was one such instance. I had been experiencing mixed weather including bitterly cold winds blowing across the mountain ranges which brought fog; shrouding the area from view. With little visibility, it became easy to forget that I was actually surrounded by some of Victoria's highest mountain tops. Later in the afternoon, as small breaks in the cloud occasionally appeared, I caught glimpses of what lay beyond the cloud and indeed beyond the snow covered ridges. Sometimes It is easy to enjoy the moment and forget to actually take a photograph. As the sun settled, the ground before me was lit with soft sunset light, while the Bon Accord track below me beckoned to the picturesque mountain village of Harrietville in the valley below. At times like these, with great views and clear mountain air, it is hard not to be relaxed and simply enjoy a peaceful end to a day in the Victorian Alps. I've been visiting and hiking Mount Buffalo since I was a child. I am always drawn back whenever I am in the area. A steep but short track led me to this stunning location. As the sun slowly set, I enjoyed spectacular views of the plateau and the granite tor of the Cathedral. This area forms part of Australia's Great Dividing Range and in winter is one of the largest snow covered areas in Australia. At all times of the year, the weather can change quickly on the High Plains and this day was no different. Earlier in the day I had left the Victorian township of Bright with temperatures well above 30 degrees celsius. By the time I reached the Bogong High Plains a changing weather system brought significantly cooler temperatures and low fog at the higher altitudes. These are things I love and recall when I think about winter in the Australian Alps. This image for me evokes memories of winter and much of what I love about photographing during the colder months. Shortly after I captured this image, the fog continued to roll in from the left, completely shrouding the scene before me. Scenes like this are constantly changing in the mountains. So with the light coming through that stormy weather, I had beautiful, even lighting despite the clear mid afternoon sky above me. Handmade in 1889 from snow gum slabs and roofed with woollybut shingles, Wallace Hut has survived the extremes of the Victorian High Country. Brothers Arthur, William, and Stewart Wallace built the hut with simple tools and timber found nearby. The Wallace family grazed their cattle on the Bogong High Plains between 1869 and 1914. Each year they would drive the stock up for four days to reach the summer feed. The hut provided welcome shelter for the graziers after a long day in the saddle. With the weather ever changing, I began to appreciate why so many cattleman's huts were built in this area. Eventually the rain cleared, but the grey and dark clouds persisted, softly illuminating the area around the hut. For me, this scene captures some of the mystique of the iconic Wallace Hut, sitting nestled in amongst the surrounding snow gums.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWallace Hut is one of 106 huts scattered across the Alpine National Park. Many of these huts were burnt in the 2003 bush fires but fortunately Wallace Hut survived. Wallace Hut is the oldest hut in the park. It was built by the three Wallace brothers - Arthur, William and Stewart - in 1889 from slabs of snowgum. They arrived as small boys in Melbourne from Ireland in 1869 with their parents. Since I was kid, Mount Feathertop has held something special to me. From the views of it from Mount Hotham, to walking up its steep slopes and the view from the summit, it has drawn me back to the Victorian Alps time and time again. Mount Feathertop is the second-highest mountain in the Australian state of Victoria, rising to 1,922 metres and is usually covered in snow from June to September. Unlike many other Australian mountains, Feathertop has steep summit slopes instead of a rounded summit dome. It is this aspect that makes it great to photograph in winter, as it is the only real Australian alpine 'peak' that gets covered in snow. On this evening, after a great sunset, I decided to remain at this location a little longer and was rewarded with the sky on the horizon lighting up with the great colours you see here. I couldn't stand up and had to bury my tripod in the snow with the camera protruding just above the snow. I was huddled over the camera to try and keep it still for this exposure. With these strong winds and below freezing temperatures overnight, ice had built up on the dead branches of these snow gums (in a classic contrast of alpine extremes, these gums had been killed by bushfires which had ravaged the area only a few years earlier). I waited for sunrise hoping for some great light on the iced snow gums before me. My patience in the cold was rewarded, when the sun rose it lit up the area with beautiful warm light.
