Merewether Ocean Baths, Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia
I captured this photograph after waiting in the car at the nearby car park being rained on as a storm front passed over. Finally, around the time of sunset, the rain finished and a sense of quiet calm descended in the post storm atmosphere. Seizing the gap before the next rain shower, I headed out and captured this image. Minutes later, the rain returned as darkness fell over the baths and the calm I captured here proved only momentary.
The Merewether Ocean Baths were built during the depression and completed in 1935 by unemployed labourers through a depression-relief scheme. The baths consist of two large rectangular pools with an overall dimension of 100 metres x 90 metres. They are the largest ocean baths in the state of New South Wales. Located just three kilometres from the Newcastle city centre, the Baths have a long history as a popular swimming spot in Newcastle.
