That was certainly true on this morning, the rising sun clipped the tops of nearby mountains as I stood alone at the shores of Blue Lake high in the Australian Alps.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlue Lake is one of only four cirque lakes found on the Australian mainland. The lake was formed when glaciers flowing from the Great Dividing Range converged and carved out a basin in the granite bedrock. Its valley contains the best-developed glacial features in the Kosciuszko National Park alpine area of New South Wales. It was windy, snowing on and off, with clouds rolling over continuously. It made traversing the area challenging and difficult to spot good compositions through the fog. During clearer moments scenes like this emerged and I was able to capture snow gums in their true winter environment. Twisted and covered in ice, they seem to stand defiant against the harsh alpine conditions both they and I were facing that day. All great fun though to experience winter in the Australian Alps.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSnow gums (Eucalyptus pauciflora) dominate subalpine woodlands mountains of the southeastern Australian mainland at the altitudinal limit to tree growth. Forests and woodlands of snow gums can look quite uniform from a distance, but up close they have such character. These examples in the Kosciuszko National Park epitomise the unique beauty in many of the older snow gums. Formed over an incredible amount of time, Bridal Veil Falls leap into the valley below from the edge of the precipice, creating a stunning 180 metre high cliff diving waterfall. Located in the heart of the Blue Mountains, the nearby cliffs boast some of the most spectacular views in the area. I was seeking to capture the true essence of the Snowy River in winter, the headwaters above the man made influence on the river downstream. With fog obscuring this view in the days prior, on this afternoon I patiently waited as the fog ebbed and flowed before sunset cast a beautiful display of pastel colours across the scene before me. There is something special about being backcountry and totally alone on the slopes of the country's highest peak with a scene like this before you. A true feeling of witnessing the largely unspoiled essence of the Snowy River. \u003cspan style=\"font-size: 0.875rem;\"\u003eThe Snowy River was once a major river in south east Australia before its flows were severely reduced to less than one percent after the construction of dams and diversions in its headwaters as part of the huge Snowy Hydro scheme. However, amongst the higher alpine catchment areas the river's course and surroundings remain relatively unchanged, draining the eastern slopes of the highest peaks in the Snowy Mountains. Poor weather and persistent fog had meant that it was difficult to see beyond a few metres in front of me. On this afternoon, the fog finally began to clear presenting me with this interplay of light over the scene before me. Setting up my tent in the afternoon I was unsure exactly what sunset would bring. By evening however the clouds had cleared and the wind all but gone, revealing a perfectly clear sky and heralding a change of weather system that would bring beautiful sunny weather the following day. After shooting this image and getting back to my campsite, just a short walk away, I enjoyed one of the calmest and most breathtaking evenings of the snow season. With clear skies, my view of some of Australia's highest mountains was illuminated by full moon throughout the night. The lake was formed when glaciers flowing from the Great Dividing Range converged and carved out a basin in the granite bedrock. Blue Lake's surface is entirely open water and is frozen for about four months of the year; overflowing in spring with the melting of the snow. I wanted to capture both of these highest features of Australia during the middle of winter. I had been camped out for a few days, not having seen anyone since I headed out backcountry. The weather had been horrible, consistent fog, snow with high winds and poor visibility, not to mention the below freezing temperatures. My morale was low having captured only a few photographs and the weather forecasts bearing no resemblance to what I was experiencing. After enduring a night of buffeting high winds I awoke on this morning before sunrise to relatively clear skies. After walking out in the pre dawn dark I was greeted by an ever changing light show before me, with dramatic changes in colours and constantly changing cloud formations due to the high winds. No other human was in sight as I looked out to the summit of Australia’s highest mountain, Mount Kosciuszko, illuminated in the distance. I was struck by the remoteness and isolation. The frozen waters of the creek below flowed into the distance. Photographing sunrises and sunsets in the winter can be a lonely and isolating experience. This was definitely one of those moments. The sunset had been uninteresting, yet as it got darker the landscape became illuminated by the afterglow of the now disappeared sun. It was these colours of winter I was determined to capture. Returning to my tent, I made dinner for the night reflecting that despite the isolation, just how awesome it is to be able to experience such moments. Although a small town, Gundagai is a popular topic for Australian writers and has become a representative icon of a typical Australian country town and forever associated with the dog on the tuckerbox in Australian folklore. The two historic Gundagai bridges pictured in this photo are the Prince Alfred Bridge and the Railway Bridge. The Prince Alfred Bridge, the bridge in the background, was built in 1866, and was the first major crossing spanning the Murumbidgee River. It formed part of the Hume Highway until it was replaced by the Sheahan Bridge, built in 1976. The Prince Alfred Bridge is the longest timber viaduct in Australia. The timber Railway Bridge in the foreground was completed in 1902 and this viaduct is 819m long.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Gundagai area is part of the traditional lands of the Wiradjuri speaking people and there is a considerable folklore associated with Aboriginal cultural and spiritual beliefs in the area. The floodplains of the Murrumbidgee below the present town of Gundagai, pictured in part in this image, were a frequent meeting place of the Wiradjuri. The original European town that was gazetted as Gundagai in 1838 was situated to left of this image on the right hand bank of the Murrumbidgee River floodplain at the place colloquially known as 'The Crossing Place'. This town was hit by several large floods of the Murrumbidgee River, with the 25 June 1852 flood sweeping the first colonial town of Gundagai away, killing at least 89 of the town's population of 250 people; it is one of the largest natural disasters in Australia's history. The small waterfall cascading over a cliff edge following earlier rain added a nice extra element. It is a stark reminder of days gone by of squatters' runs and stage coaches of the old Cobb \u0026amp; Co that used the pub as a staging post. Built in 1862, the One Tree Hotel was named because of a lone large gum tree and it was made famous by Banjo Patterson's immortal poem, 'Hay and Hell and Booligal'. The hotel was a thriving business in the days until the licence was allowed to lapse in 1942.
