Ganung Batur, Bali, Indonesia
On this day I was taken by the sheer size of this Volcano and the human life that now exists in and around its rim. I hope in some way this image conveys just some of that feeling.
Volcanologists describe Gunung Batur as a 'double caldera', one crater inside another. Shaped liked a giant bowl, it has an inner crater with a classic volcano shaped peak, the bottom half covered by water and a set of volcanic cones jutting out of the middle. The newer volcanoes have old lava flows oozing down their sides while the rim of the Gunung Batur crater offers some of Bali's most stunning vistas.
