Alligator Gorge, Mt Remarkable National Park, Flinders Ranges, South Australia, Australia

As an Australian landscape photographer, I'm often unexpectedly surprised by the less well known spots across Australia that offer great photographic opportunities. Alligator Gorge was yet another of these locations for me. Located within Mount Remarkable National Park, this spectacular gorge has been cut through ancient quartzite by the Alligator Creek and is one of the premier natural attractions in the Southern Flinders Ranges. During an afternoon of rather persistent yet light rain, I wandered along the gorge but was drawn back to this shallow water hole. When the rain eased slightly, the overcast sky created beautiful even lighting that really brought out the colours of the foliage and rock walls. It really was as peaceful and tranquil as this photograph looks.
