Routeburn River

Routeburn River, Mount Aspiring National Park, South Island, New Zealand

I was drawn to the colours of these alpine waters as I walked part of the Routeburn Track. As I investigated this area looking for just the right composition, I found this secluded bend in the Routeburn River. The rocks and running water created a great contrast against the forest behind. Having taken the photograph I stayed a while before moving on, simply enjoying the feeling of be in part of one of the great wilderness locations of New Zealand.

The Routeburn River runs through the Mt Aspiring National Park. Named for Mount Aspiring, one of New Zealand's highest peaks, this park is a dreamland of mountains, glaciers, river valleys and alpine lakes. The area is an alpine heaven for hikers, mountaineers and heli skiiers. For wilderness lovers, the park offers an extensive choice of valley journeys, including the Routeburn Track.
