I was cold and frustrated as the high winds made it difficult to photograph. Late in the day, the storm stopped and all over Mount Hotham the snow gums were covered in snow. It was a total winter wonderland. I found this secluded area, surrounded by snow gums buried and covered in ice and snow. Battling strong winds and constant snow meant challenging conditions to keep my camera lens dry and not get blown away. The result was a capture of fresh snow falling on this snow gum. I love to experience such winter weather amongst stunning Australian scenery as well as bringing back photos of true winter alpine moments. There are 36 boulders shoulder to shoulder, forming deep valleys and steep-sided gorges. Many visitors to the area find them more captivating than their prominent neighbour Uluru (Ayers Rock). Together these giant stone formations form the two major landmarks within the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. As I took this photo, it was calm and behind me it was blue sky and sunny. Yet moments after I took this photo and made the mad dash back to the car, I was subjected to incredibly strong winds and heavy rain as this storm front came through. The dry desert around me quickly became submerged under water with flash flooding the result. The wind was so strong that further up the road from this location, large high tension power lines and poles were brought down and the floodwaters so deep and current so strong that I was unable to return to my night's accommodation, instead having to seek refuge at a nearby pub for the night. Later that morning a large snow storm arrived and dumped nearly a metre of snow over the next few days. This particular afternoon in the Victorian Alps was one such instance. I had been experiencing mixed weather including bitterly cold winds blowing across the mountain ranges which brought fog; shrouding the area from view. With little visibility, it became easy to forget that I was actually surrounded by some of Victoria's highest mountain tops. Later in the afternoon, as small breaks in the cloud occasionally appeared, I caught glimpses of what lay beyond the cloud and indeed beyond the snow covered ridges. This derelict farm cottage near the town of Burra, in South Australia, was made famous after a photograph of it was used as the cover for the Australian rock band Midnight Oil's album ‘Diesel and Dust’ in the 1980s. Like many other ruins in the area, I'm sure this old farmhouse has its own special story to tell about its past. With no markings as to its history, I stood there imagining the original inhabitants looking out on the land before them from the front door and really wanted to capture this connection to the past. I’ve found it is in those moments in particular I feel drawn to capture photographs to share with others. That was certainly true on this morning, the rising sun clipped the tops of nearby mountains as I stood alone at the shores of Blue Lake high in the Australian Alps.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlue Lake is one of only four cirque lakes found on the Australian mainland. The lake was formed when glaciers flowing from the Great Dividing Range converged and carved out a basin in the granite bedrock. Its valley contains the best-developed glacial features in the Kosciuszko National Park alpine area of New South Wales. It was windy, snowing on and off, with clouds rolling over continuously. It made traversing the area challenging and difficult to spot good compositions through the fog. During clearer moments scenes like this emerged and I was able to capture snow gums in their true winter environment. Twisted and covered in ice, they seem to stand defiant against the harsh alpine conditions both they and I were facing that day. Earlier in the day I had left the Victorian township of Bright with temperatures well above 30 degrees celsius. By the time I reached the Bogong High Plains a changing weather system brought significantly cooler temperatures and low fog at the higher altitudes. The first two nights, my tent got buried in snow and the visibility was very limited. Breaks in the weather however permitted chances to witness this hut against the impressive backdrop of its alpine surrounds. Dark and dingy inside, when the hut is buried in snow, it is accessed via a door at the top of the 'chimney'. The little red hut is a beacon for those seeking to escape the stormy weather that can come in very quickly around Mount Kosciuszko. It is quite difficult to comprehend the sheer scale of time that has gone before when visiting much of this area. Its vast, ancient and at times seemingly empty. There are magnificent mountains with razor like edges that glow red at sunrise and sunset. Emus and kangaroos pass by, seemingly out of place in a modern world so dominated by large cities. Were it not for the man made roads or occasional sounds of a passing car, it's easy to imagine you are lost in a time long, long ago.
