I photographed this scene from a distance, a few weeks after camping out below the summit and having made my own winter ascent to the top of Feathertop. At full size, you can see two people returning down from the summit (which sits outside of the frame to the right).
At 1,922 metres high, Mount Feathertop is the second highest mountain in Victoria. I have been to the summit in all seasons, but getting to the summit in winter can prove more challenging depending on the weather conditions. With an icy approach and cornice edges that can collapse, Mount Feathertop has claimed many lives, especially amongst those seeking to ski or snowboard into the southern gullies that make up some of the most extreme ski runs in Australia. Despite these hazards, the journey to the summit in winter offersbreathtakingly picturesque views of the surrounding Victorian Alps and a satisfying reward for the effort to get there.
