The Sopwith Camel was a British World War One single-seat fighter aircraft introduced onto the Western From in 1917. A successor to the Sopwith Pup, the Sopwith Aviation Company produced the famous Sopwith F.1 Camel, which accounted for more victories than any other aircraft in World War One. The Camel was not considered pleasant to fly, but its agility in combat made the Sopwith Camel one of the best remembered Allied aircraft of World War One. Together with the S.E.5a, the Camel helped to wrest aerial superiority away from the German Albatros scouts. Camel pilots were credited with shooting down 1,294 enemy aircraft, more than any other Allied fighter of the conflict. It also served as a ground-attack aircraft, especially towards the end of the war when it had become outclassed in the air-to-air role.
The Sopwtih Camel was operated by the forerunner of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), the Australian Flying Corps (AFC).
